PIONEER  DAY  IN  THE  VILLAGE

The Antique Village held its second annual "Pioneer Day" this year. This is an annual March event along with the annual "Sidewalk Sale" which took place on the same day. Mattie Street was closed to vehicular traffic as craftsmen lined the street displaying items of times past. All of the shops in the Antique Village set up special sale tables outside for the exciting sidewalk sale. Meanwhile on Mattie Street, there were displays of old farm implements, plows, iron wheels, yokes, and much more. There was a table displaying hand carved Louisiana cypress knees, an old gristmill was grinding corn and selling fresh ground corn meal. A John Deere engine was operating next to the gristmill that is used to make up some real home made ice cream!!!!  As you strolled down the street two craftsmen were using their hand tools to make a dugout pirogue. On display and a great photo shoot for the kids was a large John Deere tractor and also an old covered wagon just like used on trail rides!  Inside of the refurbished Old City Hall, ladies were rocking and making quilts (along with a lot of stories, I'm sure). Upstairs, hook rugs were displayed and being made as guest watched. Stepping out on to the porch, a gentleman was caning chairs. What a great day in the ANTIQUE VILLAGE of DENHAM SPRINGS !!!!!
